Walking with the Mola Mola - Nusa Lembongan - Bali
August 2007
When the colors of sinuous carved terraces in the mountains alternate between the intense green of the emerald keep planting rice just check, silver reflective of the waters of flooded rice fields and caressed by the rays of the sun, or stay locked in when half a dense crowd of people in procession and you find yourself in a riot of scents, songs and color, glossy fruit baskets, ordered a pyramid, poised on a small head of a woman with her hair gathered, adorned with colorful flowers and placed at art for the festival, while men and children are perfectly dressed in white shirt, sarong and traditional headgear, when you see everywhere small tenders for the gods made up of small baskets of leaf palm with Ghirlandina inside a leaf, un po 'di rice, colorful flowers, a cookie, candy or whatever, all accompanied by at least one naturally lit incense stick, you find all that you can not really go wrong, you come to Bali!
One of the goals chosen our summer trip to Bali was a small and simple island, not much frequented by mass tourism, Nusa Lembongan, which is located a few miles off the southeast coast of Bali, protected by the largest Nusa Penida to the Ocean and through an folklore attached iron bridge to the tiny Nusa Ceningan.
Overlooking the Strait of Badung, Nusa Lembongan lies on a strip of land of about 3 to 4 kilometers and boasts of beautiful white beaches and vast expanses of mangroves, in addition of course to a beautiful coral reef that makes it an ideal place for those who like to do diving, although the small island is especially famous among surfers for its waves.
We have chosen the World Diving (http://www.world-diving.com/), which we believe is the best on the island, both in terms of competence, both for availability, both for the organization of the boats.
The Mola mola is the largest bony fish in the world, is a pelagic fish that grows up to 3 meters in length and up to a weight of over 2 tons, with the dorsal and ventral fins can be extended to measure up to 4 meters. Its caudal fin has really very little mobility being un'escrescenza fleshy, and the locomotion is totally entrusted to the other two opposed, symmetrical fins. Branquial openings are reduced to a hole just before the pectoral fin; no real teeth but a sort of spout that protrudes from the tiny mouth and disproportionate. His skin is rough and tough, no scales, can reach even the thickness of 15 cm and usually hosts up to 50 different species of parasites.
He lives mainly in temperate and tropical waters feeds on plankton, small fish and jellyfish, live offshore, but often sighted along the coastal waters. It is also an extremely long fish: presumably exceed widely the hundred years of age.
During a dive in Crystal Bay, also called Penida Bay, we had the great fortune of having seen two and honestly until Watching them live you can not just give an account of how large and powerful; the first arrived from inside the bay and we went ahead, however, remained at a safe distance of about a dozen meters, the second hand, to our great joy, come directly from the blue, we approached a few centimeters, allowing you to to see a fantastic spectacle. It was exactly what the moment when he decided to approach the wall to get clean fish barrier. The scene was something incredible: imagine a big fish Moonlight over 2 meters long that is approaching slowly towards us, totally unmindful of our presence to the point that there siamo Watched shocked and appalled by what was happening. Then he stopped, opened the small round mouth and behold, in just a few moments, the show just materialize before our eyes: a cloud of butterfly fish from banner is scaled to him for thoroughly cleaning the parasites in all its smallest fold, a platoon of garbage at work as a real station cleaning! A truly amazing performance ...
